As promised in this post I am attaching the interview clips (it's a speaker phone interview so it's a little crackly) from my conversation with Vernon Reid from the seminal black rock which was first broadcast on 270110 and 0030 UK Time. For those not aware of the significance of this band here is some background...
Living Colour is an American funk metal band from New York City, formed in 1983. Stylistically, the band's music is a creative fusion influenced by heavy metal, funk, hard rock, free jazz, hardcore punk and hip hop.The band was formed in New York City in 1983 by guitarist Vernon Reid. They grew out of the Black Rock Coalition, a non-profit organization founded by (among others) Reid for black musicians interested in playing rock music.
Living Colour rose to fame with their debut album Vivid in 1988. Although the band scored a number of hits, they are best remembered for their anthemic single "Cult of Personality", which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1989, and their highest charting single "Type". They were also named Best New Artist at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. After disbanding in 1995, Living Colour reunited in 2000. The band released their fifth studio album, The Chair in the Doorway, on September 15, 2009 on Megaforce Records
....So I really help you all enjoy this . I actually had to privilege of speaking with Vernon maybe 2 and a half hours - and we started about 7am NY time so major respect goes out to Vernon for agreeing to get on the phone and speak so early.
We covered loads of topics and since my show is only an hour long there was no way I could fit it all in but I edited down 30 mins and cut it into 30 min chunks. I may play more of the conversation in the current weeks and including parts about 'the concept of legendary figures', the 'NAMM show' and more. But in these clips people and topics covered include - the history of Lviing Colour, The new album - Chair in the Doorway, Mick Jagger, Ike Turner and the origins of rock n roll, politics in popular music, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Vernon's favourite 90s bands and much more!
Enjoy!!
